The diagram below shows at a glance the twenty eight symptoms of mania that I experience and also how they are interlinked. It’s a quick reference, if you will.

Alternatively, you can go to the itemised list of symptoms that I have when I am hypomanic or manic, which describes the symptoms in detail.

  1. I have read through your website, and I really relate to it. I was recently diagnosed with major depressive disorder with possible bipolar 2 or adhd. My doctor gave me a high dose of antidepressants. My question is, is it possible that my pills are spiking the mania that I am currently experiencing? How can I tell my doctor about this without feeling so silly about what I’m saying? You seem experienced and knowledgable about your condition… Hope you can help. Thank you.

    1. Emily,

It IS possible for antidepressants to trigger a mania episode – it’s something me and my psych discussed each time I was put on antidepressants.

Do not feel silly contacting your doctor about this – this is a reasonable action to take. I’d suggest you do it sooner rather than waiting.

What you tell the doctor is “I’m acting manic, and I think the antidepressants are causing it / making it worse. What should I do?”

Your doctor and you can talk about it and you can both decide on what to do next. I’m not offering any suggestions because my interfering with your doctor’s advice is not a good thing.

It may be possible for you to have this discussion over the telephone with your doctor, or at your next appointment. If the mania is sufficiently disruptive, it is also reasonable for your parent / partner / etc. to contact the psych on your behalf to ask the question and get the advice.

      Ta da!
      Hope this helps.

  2. I agree, as someone recently diagnosed, I take prozac but it definately induces the mania. Its the only thing that really helps the depression though, so I deal with the mania spikes with diet, excersize, and as needed ativan/zyprexa
